Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods becomes official on Mon. Aug 28. At the same time, Amazon is planning to roll out price drops on a large number of products. Not only that, Amazon will be implementing Prime rewards for people who shop at Whole Foods, introducing Amazon lockers at Whole Foods stores, and bringing Whole Foods brands online to Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Now, Amazon Pantry.
Let's break all this down:
What's dropping in price?
Eventually, probably everything. Whole Foods has long been criticized for having prices that were far too expensive. Starting Monday, the first major price drops cover a bunch of Whole Foods staples, including: bananas, organic avocados, organic large brown eggs, organic responsibly-farmed salmon and tilapia, organic baby kale and baby lettuce, animal-welfare-rated 85% lean ground beef, creamy and crunchy almond butter, organic Gala and Fuji apples, organic rotisserie chicken, 365 Everyday Value organic butter.
Finally, cheap kale!
|Product||Old Price||New Price|
|365 Everyday Value Organic Butter (salted and unsalted)||$5.29/lb.||$4.49|
|Animal-Welfare-Rated 85% Lean Ground Beef||$6.99/lb.||$4.99|
|Creamy Almond Butter||$7.99/lb.||$6.99|
|Crunchy Almond Butter||$7.99/lb.||$6.99|
|Organic Baby Kale (packaged)||$3.99||$3.49|
|Organic Baby Lettuce (packaged "Sweet Baby Lettuces")||$3.99||$3.49|
|Organic Gala Apples||$2.99/lb.||$1.99|
|Organic Fuji Apples||$3.49/lb.||$1.99|
|Organic Large Brown Eggs||$4.29/dozen||$3.99|
|Organic Rotisserie Chicken||$13.99||$9.99|
|Responsibly-Farmed Atlantic Salmon Filet||$14.99/lb.||$9.99|
|Whole Trade Organic Bananas||$0.99/lb.||$0.69|
|Whole Trade Bananas||$0.79/lb.||$0.49|
If they're dropping the price, does that mean they're dropping the quality?
No. the CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, Jeff Wilke, said in a press release "we will lower prices without compromising Whole Foods Market's long-held commitment to the highest standards." This also means products won't start coming from shady sources, either. Wilke added Amazon wants to continue supporting local farmers.
How does Amazon Prime help me at Whole Foods?
It's not going to help right away, but the idea is eventually Prime will become the "rewards program" at Whole Foods. Much like you need one of those little cards on your key chain or have to insert your phone number at Kroger's to save a buck on fruit, that'll eventually be how you use Amazon Prime. They have to figure out the technical details of making that happen first, but it's another great reason to sign up for Prime.
What are Amazon Lockers and why should I care?
Amazon Lockers are something that already exists, in case you didn't know. The Lockers exist in fixed locations and act as a drop-off point for Amazon goods if you don't want to have them delivered to your home or business. You can also return items to Amazon through Lockers. Introducing Amazon Lockers to Whole Foods might be the single best use for them so far because you'll be able to order your food, drive up to the store, pick it up out of the locker and go on home.
So I'll be able to shop online for Whole Foods soon?
Yes! Amazon already has a whole bunch of brands available online, and the purchase of Whole Foods brings a bunch more into the fold like Whole Paws, Whole Catch, and 365 Everyday Value. If you already shop at Whole Foods regularly and are used to those brands or any of the other Whole Foods brands, you'll soon be able to get them anywhere you can shop for Amazon food, including Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry, and Prime Now.
What are AmazonFresh and Prime Pantry?
AmazonFresh is an Amazon service not included with the base Prime fee, even though you need Prime to get it. It actually costs an extra $15 a month. It's a grocery and pickup delivery service, and thanks to this Whole Foods sale you can expect to be seeing a lot more about it in the future. Having access to Whole Foods' resources may make AmazonFresh a much more viable option, and hopefully cheaper too.
Prime Pantry is another grocery service from Amazon. A lot of groceries and household goods are cost-prohibitive to ship individually online. Prime Pantry lets you select several items, up to five per box, and ship them all at once with a flat $6 fee. I imagine this will also be something that is impacted by Whole Foods in the future.
Both of these services are relatively new and not fully up to par with the quality of other Amazon benefits. I really think this what a motivating factor for the Whole Foods buyout because Amazon wants to get better at groceries. So if you're interested in services like this, you can expect a lot more from them.
What's the benefit of having Whole Foods stuff on Prime Now?
Prime Now is Amazon's two-hour delivery service. It's a free extra that comes with Prime membership, but it is not all-encompassing. Not only are the items you can select for Prime Now limited, but its availability is dependent on where you live. With a new source for groceries and household goods, not to mention hundreds of new locations, Whole Foods might mean new life for Prime Now. Imagine being able to order all your groceries online and have them delivered to you in under two hours. You'd never need to leave your apartment again.
Given time we will see a lot of big changes to the way Amazon does groceries, especially how Amazon does groceries online. Whole Foods Markets are going to be cheaper and more accessible. All of this means good things for us, especially if you have a Prime membership.
